My Favourite Brown Sugar Scrub Recipe - Get ready for summer.

Body Scrub Recipe - Get Ready for Summer

It has been ages since I shared a recipe. This one is one of my favorites. I was actually making myself a batch of this sugar scrub when I thought my Made by Pure Hands friends would love this. Particularly as it's one of things we ladies do to get ready for summer.

I started making scrubs long before I became an aromatherapist. If you’ve read my My Eczema Journey, The Woman Behind Made by Pure Hands blogs or listened to the interview on Vicki Weinberg’s Bring Your Product to Life podcast, you’ll know this fascination with natural products started years before this brand was born. The scrub making started in the late nineties/early noughties when detoxing was a thing. Now I wasn’t a detox junkie, but I had bought a book and from time to time (about once a year) I would drag my friends for a girlie detox weekend at my house, or theirs (lol). In this particular detox book, it had lots of beauty product recipes. Even some yoga moves. Well, the author talked about using sugar as a scrub and to this day I will add caster sugar into my cleanser as a gentle scrub and use brown sugar for my body scrub. And this is just what this scrub recipe's main ingredient is, brown sugar. Out of all the sugars I have tried, this one doesn’t dissolve into your oil/cream base and will last weeks in a good airtight container like the one pictured.

Since I became an aromatherapist, I have perfected this recipe and made various variations depending on my skincare needs. So here is my basic recipe and you can add 2 or 3 of the essential oils on the list to your blend. Just don’t go over the total recommended amount of essential oils. Enjoy.

Ingredients

  • A 250g container or jar

  • A fork

  • A measuring beaker

  • 250g Brown demerara sugar

  • 100 ml of Sweet Almond Oil, Sunflower Oil, or Grapeseed Oil

  • 10ml of Avocado oil, Calendula oil, or Hemp oil (If using one of these oils, reduce your 100ml oil to 90ml. I would only recommend using the 10ml if you have extremely dry skin, mild eczema, or you are making this in the winter months)

  • 10-30 drops of essential oil. Here are some to choose from and why you would choose them:

    • Lemon - Oily skin, blocked pores, or for an invigorating blend.

    • Lime - Same effects as Lemon.

    • Grapefruit - Detoxing, your circulation is sluggish, or you need an uplifting blend.

    • Juniperberry - To detox plus you love a Gin!

    • Frankincense - For dry, mature skin, and you need a soothing effect.

    • Lavender - All skin types and would like a healing blend.

    • Rose - ‘Hello it's my birthday’/I am a Queen and I deserve the best. Good for mature skin too to regenerate.

    • Neroli - Scarring, uplift me please. This oil is pure gold!

    • Black Pepper - You need an oil to help you find your strength and need to improve your circulation.

    • Rosemary - Another boost my circulation oil plus you need to put a pep in your step!

    • Geranium - Such a nurturing oil for body, mind, and spirit.

I could go on and on, can you tell I am enjoying putting this recipe together! Feel free to use your own favorite essential oils. For more inspiration/information, pick up a copy of Aromatherapy for Mental Wellbeing by Julia Oyeleye from the Made by Pure Hands shop.

Instructions:

  1. Mix your essential oils into your 100ml oil.

  2. Add a third of the sugar to a 250g container. Pour in enough of your 100ml oil mix to cover the sugar and mix together. Then add another third of each and mix again. Then mix the remainder of the sugar and oil. The sugar and oil should be completely combined. Then you can cover with the lid.

I like to add my sugar scrub to my already soapy sponge. I apply it to wet skin. As this scrub is very oily, you may find you don’t need to moisturise after rinsing off.

Please note - This recipe is specifically for the body and not the face.
